The Government Code & Cipher School had been set up in Room 40 at the Admiralty during the First World War. By the 30’s they were aware of the existence of the German Enigma machine and its use by the Wehrmacht. Thanks to the Polish security service the GC&CS had an Enigma to study, and Polish mathematicians had made inroads into the cryptanalytical problems it presented.
