Turing’s design for the Bombe machine was refined by Gordon Welchman, and proved invaluable in speeding up the process of sifting through all the possible Enigma settings until a match was found that would correctly decrypt a ‘crib’- a word guessed from context. A bombe machine simulated 36 Enigmas working in parallel. By the end of the war over 200 bombes had been built, and were operated by WRENS at BP and various outstations in surrounding villages.
