about

Visitors to France will be familiar with the road sign asking drivers to slow down on entering a village.
A song which has been at least eight years in the making. The underlying chord sequence was improvised against the rhythm track, the acoustic guitar solo dates from that same early version. The song developed later but got stuck on the words for the second verse. The final version of the words arrived recently, but in the meantime all sorts of stuff had been thrown at the track.

lyrics

Pensez à nos enfants

Please slow down, (pensez à nos enfants)
Please slow down, (pensez à nos enfants)
Please slow down, slow down.

Running late, hurry man, hurry
Never told him that it was so far
Running late and eaten with worry
Take it out on the company car

Tail-gating and waiting for chances
Slipping round on the crown of the bend
Every place up the queue he advances
Doesn’t look like the queue ever comes to an end

When he looks back on this he won’t believe
Just how stupid he was,
just how crazy and dangerous
How did the accident come to be such a surprise?
Now the adrenaline’s dried in his veins
And the ambulance siren has stopped
He can still feel the shock as the kid hits the bumper
And flies up in front of his eyes

Sunrise, it’s a precious new morning
Clear skies, we can see what to do
Can’t deny we’ve been given fair warning
Slow down, time to take in the view
See the bear staring out from the ice floe
See the butterfly crushed on a wheel
See mahogany forest in ashes
See the harpoon and whale, see the club and the seal

When we look back on this we won’t believe
Just how stupid we were, self deceiving and devious
How come catastrophe came to be such a surprise?
Fooling ourselves as we sit on our hands
That the whole thing will turn out alright
There will still be a shock when the world hits the bumper
And dies right in front of our eyes.
