about

The Royal Navy’s watch system designated the midnight to 04:00 shift as the ‘Middle Watch’.
BP worked twenty four hours around the clock. Each new day’s Enigma messages began to come in after midnight, with the day’s settings to be discovered before any decoding could be done. Notoriously the ability to break German Naval Enigma was lost for ten months in 1942 due to the addition of a fourth rotor to the Kriegsmarine’s version of the Enigma machine.
German U-Boats operated in groups which were dubbed ‘Wolf-packs’.
Corvettes were a type of vessel used for convoy protection.

lyrics

The sister:

Working the night shift, it’s pouring outside.
Letters are swimming in front of my eyes.

Hours after midnight, can’t stop myself yawning.
Headache from bright light and longing for morning.

I think of my brother on board his corvette,
Herding a convoy, frightened and frozen and wet.

The brother:

Wolf-pack around us, a gathering storm.
Dark as the grave - will I ever be warm?

I’m not religious but I’m saying my prayers-
Will someone watch over us till daylight appears?

Will it ever appear?

Then the sun rises. Then the sun rises.
